On Aug. 21, 1922, George Cleveland Curtis gave Apache Junction its name. To kick off the year-long celebration of the founding of Apache Junction, there will be an event 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Prospector Park, 3015 N. Idaho Road in Apache Junction.

The event is free to the public and will open with a presentation of the colors by the Apache Junction High School Reserve Officer Training Corps Color Guard and close with a fireworks display, according to a release.

Live entertainment will be provided throughout the day on the stage by local bands “Mogollon,” “Highway 85” and “Outside the Line.”

A beer garden and food and drink vendors will be available all day to keep attendees nourished.

In addition to the live musical entertainment there will be many activities going on at the park including staged gunfights, a car show, gold-panning demonstrations, a Pony Express hand-off, cowboy rope tricks, local favorite Teton Ken and his burro Mary, ventriloquist Chuckwagon Wanda and her goofy sidekick Digger the Donkey, and the miniature burro duo of Pip and Lil’ Bill.

The stars of the hit History Channel TV series Legends of the Superstitions — Woody, Frank, and Wayne — will be on hand, telling stories about the Lost Dutchman.

For the kids there will be bounce houses, pony rides and a petting zoo that has snakes the kids can pet.

The more active attendees can enter the pie-eating contest or the corn hole tournament.

Props will be set up all over the park to provide the whole family with great photo ops.

The Apache Junction Founder’s Centennial Committee would like to thank its major corporate sponsors: Salt River Project (SRP), Republic Services, Superstition Fire and Medical District, Fry’s Food Stores and the city of Apache Junction for their support of this event.

“It is only through the generous contributions by these awesome partners and the countless other sponsors that we are able to put on this great event for the citizens of our great community,” Braden Biggs, chair of the Centennial Committee, said in the release.

Anyone interested in being a vendor at this event should contact Jeff Danford at jeffdanford@aol.com.
