In early returns, with 176,384 votes counted, Proposition 486 for continuing Pinal County’s half-cent excise tax for road maintenance is passing with more than 75% in favor.
The latest unofficial results are from 5:38 p.m. Nov. 7 and include: Proposition 486 has 133,575 (75.73%) yes votes and 42,809 (24.27%) no votes.
Approximate numbers of ballots left to tabulate include 20,600 early ballots and 3,723 provisional ballots, according to the Pinal County website.
The initial drop of results at about 8 p.m. Nov. 5 is from early ballots that have been received prior to Election Day. Results will continue to be on the county’s website and social media platforms as they are made available, according to Pinal County’s website.
Pinal County’s half-cent excise tax for road maintenance originally passed in 1986, was renewed in 2005, and is set to expire at the end of 2026 unless it is approved by voters Nov. 5.
A “yes” vote extends the tax until 2046. The 20-year continuation of the tax is projected to generate $800 million to $1.2 billion in revenue and be used for road repair, pothole repair, road widening, road preservation, new road construction, intersection improvements and traffic safety improvements, according to Pinal County.
