Community groups from around Mesa will join forces on Saturday, Feb. 1, to raise money to fight child abuse when they host the “Hope on the Move 5K Run to End Child Abuse.”
In 2022, Arizona had 84,730 referrals to authorities for child abuse and neglect, according to the Child Welfare League of America. That number reflects cases of neglect (80%), physical abuse (9.4%), psychological maltreatment (6.3%), and sexual abuse (4.2%). Most child victims of abuse are 3 years old and under, according to a release.
Proceeds from this 5K event benefit A New Leaf, a Mesa-based nonprofit focused on “Helping Families, Changing Lives” by providing life-changing services to those facing domestic violence, homelessness, and other heartbreaking challenges. With nearly 40 programs at locations across the Valley, A New Leaf works to address some of the most pressing challenges in our local community.
The Hope on the Move event on Feb. 1 starts with a free 1K Fun Run (for kids, scooters and strollers) at 8:15 a.m. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and costs $25 to enter. Participants will receive a race day T-shirt and a goodie bag.
It’s being held at Dobson High School, 1501 W. Guadalupe Road in Mesa and the deadline to register for both runs is Jan. 18.
