A Cactus Canyon Junior High School team showcased their mathematical prowess and secured fourth place at the 18th Annual Central Arizona College Middle School Math Contest held Nov. 3.
The students — Aiden Baker, Colin Hooper, Emily Mitchell, Charlie Rojas Bedolla and Hudson Myers — not only demonstrated exceptional problem-solving skills but also embraced the full experience of the event, according to a release.
“Despite initial nerves, they forged ahead, engaging with fellow students who share a passion for mathematics. The competition also provided a unique platform for our students to explore the college campus, delving into the mathematical aspects of its design, including landscaping choices, with their coach, Kathleen “Ms. D.” Donlan,” it stated..
“One noteworthy moment during the event was when Emily Mitchell, a talented seventh-grade student, captivated her peers by playing a beautiful piano piece. This not only showcased her musical talent but also added a delightful touch to the overall experience for the CCJH team,” according to the release.
“The dedication and enthusiasm displayed by our CCJH math team are truly commendable. Their success in the Central Arizona College Math Contest reflects the exceptional quality of education and commitment to excellence within our district,” Dr. Robert Pappalardo, superintendent of AJUSD, said.
Kathleen Donlan, AJUSD’s mathematics instructional coach, echoed this sentiment, saying, “We are thrilled with the performance of our students in the competition. Their willingness to step out of their comfort zones, engage in meaningful discussions and appreciate the mathematical intricacies of the college campus is a testament to their passion for learning.”
“As the CCJH math team reflects on their wonder-filled experience, they eagerly anticipate future competition opportunities, with eyes set on further growth and success in the world of mathematics,” the release states.
The students were honored during the AJUSD Board meeting on Nov. 14 with a certificate ceremony. The students’ families were invited to attend and share in the celebration of the team’s achievement.
