Arizona tops 108,000 cases of COVID-19

The Arizona Department of Health Services is reporting over 108,000 cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday morning.

In Arizona, there are 108,614 cases and 1,963 deaths of the novel coronavirus, up 3,520 and 36 from Tuesday morning, respectively. This comes a day after the department reported 117 deaths, with 52 of them from death certificate matching.

Arizona is one of nine states with over 100,000 cases after Georgia surpassed that marked Tuesday. Arizona is the 14th most populous state in the nation.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health reports 69,954 cases and 922 deaths in Arizona’s most populous county.

Maricopa County shows a case rate of 1,506 cases per 100,000 residents, using 2019 Census Bureau estimates. The state average is 1,492. Santa Cruz County has the highest at 4,432 cases per 100,000 residents.

The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough for most people.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness including pneumonia, and death.
