Apache Junction unveils new interactive tool to view city projects

Posted

Apache Junction has launched an interactive geographic information system tool that details Fiscal Year 2024-25 capital improvement projects approved by the city council.

The tool is part of an ongoing effort to promote transparency and keep residents and businesses in Apache Junction informed and engaged, according to a release.

“We are excited to launch this interactive tool, as it simplifies access to information about projects aimed at enhancing our community’s quality of life,” Trina Harrison, capital improvement plan program manager at the city of Apache Junction, said in the release.

Capital improvement projects generally involve new infrastructure and facilities, major improvements or additions to streets, parks, buildings, and various capital equipment purchases, fleet and major technology investments as well as Apache Junction Water District system upgrades.

Currently, the tool lists 69 projects across multiple city departments and the Apache Junction Water District, which are made possible through the use of several different funding sources, including:

  • Development fees: Fees paid by new developers that assist municipalities in offsetting infrastructure costs associated with providing necessary public services. The funds can be used to retire debt issued for growth-related projects.
  • Capital fund: Dollars allocated by the city from the general fund, general savings, capital replacement and other operating funds to the capital improvement projects as approved by the city council for the purpose of completing capital improvement projects.
  • Highway user revenue fund: State-shared revenues, which are also commonly combined with various grants to support the design and construction of streets and storm water projects.
  • Street sales tax: Dollars used to fund transportation infrastructure projects such as maintenance, repair, construction, etc.
  • Grants and other intergovernmental funding: Grant funding that has been made available from federal, state, and county sources.

The new capital improvement projects tool, created by the city’s GIS division, boasts features that enable users to search CIP projects by department, status and fiscal year in which they are funded via an interactive map. Other features include a description of each project, estimated budget, funding sources, project number, and estimated timeline.

The capital improvement plan tool is to be updated monthly as projects develop and is anticipated to include the Council’s FY 2025/2026 projects once approved, in addition to the five-year capital improvement plan, once finalized and approved.

Although the tool is new, the city has developed other geographic information system tools that provide information on development services projects, FEMA floodplains, parks and facilities, public art, traffic counts, water service provider lookup, and zoning districts.
