Apache Junction High School students swept the local VFW Voice of Democracy Competition, winning first, second and third place.
The subject of the speech was "What makes America great?"
The winners were Chris Munro, who won first place and will move on to the district-level competition; James Armstrong, who won third place; and Brady Williams, who won second place.
Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay, according to vfw.org/community/youth-and-education/youth-scholarships.
Each year, nearly 40,000 ninth-12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.9 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program, according to the website.
