Apache Junction July Fourth celebration has volleyball tourney, fireworks

Posted

Join the city of Apache Junction for its annual free Fourth of July Celebration on Sunday, July 4.

Kicking off the festivities is a volleyball tournament at Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center, 1091 W. Southern Ave. Registration for the free tournament begins at 7:15 a.m., according to a release.

Space is limited to the first eight volleyball teams — up to 10 players per team — to register. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Spectators must pay pool admission to swim, but there is no fee to watch the tournament. Admission is waived for tournament participants.

The aquatic center will be open for open swim 9 a.m.-3 p.m. that day and daily admission rates apply.

Evening events are at Apache Junction High School’s football field, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Game booths, hosted by local non-profit organizations, and activities for kids start at 6 p.m. Some of the activities include a bicycle/wagon/tricycle float contest, with judging at 6:30 p.m.; water games; activity packs; face painting; and live entertainment.

“Corporate Lockdown” will be rocking out some tunes on the event stage 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will kick off the fireworks extravaganza at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks show is presented by Republic Services. This is a free event, open to the public, with a small fee for food and game booths.

“Parking is limited, so please come early. There will be traffic restrictions. Please plan for delays,” the release states.

The Fourth of July festivities are all on school property and no consumer fireworks, alcohol, smoking, glass containers, pets or weapons will be allowed at the event or adjacent parking/viewing areas. Bags and coolers brought in to the facility will be checked.

“If you choose to bring a pop-up tent into the event grounds you will be required to bring sandbags to anchor the tent to the ground,” the release states.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase on-site. If you have a request for accommodation, call the parks department at 480-474-5240 prior to the event. Only service animals will be permitted into the stadium.

“We would like to thank our fireworks-presenting sponsor Republic Services as well as our event supporters — the Apache Junction Unified School District, Apache Junction Little League, Superstition Fire and Medical (District), the Apache Junction Police Department and Superstition Mountain Community Facilities District No. 1; without their assistance, this event would not be possible,” the release states.
