Apache Junction council on Tuesday to discuss extending two sales taxes

Posted

The Apache Junction City Council on Nov. 5 is to direct city staff regarding the continuation of a .2% sales tax that is set to expire on March 1, 2025, and a .2% sales tax that is set to expire on Sept. 1, 2026.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers, 300 E. Superstition Blvd.

The current sales tax — or transaction privilege tax — rate in Apache Junction is 9.1%, with 5.6% for the state of Arizona, 1.1% for Pinal County and 2.4% for the city of Apache Junction, according to the city’s website.

The city of Apache Junction does not have a property tax.

The Apache Junction City Council on Dec. 2, 2014, approved an ordinance that created a .2% sales tax dedicated to the maintenance, repair and reconstruction of Apache Junction roadways. Collections began March 1, 2015, and the tax sunsets 10 years later, on March 1, 2025.

The mayor and council gave direction at the Sept. 1, 2015, meeting to prepare an ordinance that would allow for the continuation of a .2% sales tax implemented in 2000 to fund soft capital such as city vehicles and facility maintenance that was scheduled to sunset, or end, in 2010, but the council decided to keep it for another six years to Sept. 1, 2016. The .2% tax approved Nov. 7, 2015, is dedicated to paying mandatory contributions to the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System and other city law-enforcement costs and sunsets Sept. 1, 2026, according to city agendas, minutes and Independent archives.
