AJUSD task force examines school-reopening options

Apache Junction Unified School District has assembled a task force to evaluate and prepare a number of options regarding reopening school for the 2020-21 school year.

The 16-member team is divided into subcommittees that include facilities, wellness, transportation, technology and curriculum, according to a release.

The team is conducting independent research as well as communicating with other school districts to view their models regarding reopening during the pandemic.

The task force will focus on different areas that include: employee and student safety measures, health guidelines, recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, examining ways the district can support families, and extracurricular planning.

The team is comprised of a variety of staff that includes: a high school and an elementary administrator; a high school, junior high and elementary teacher; the food service director; the public relations coordinator; the facilities director; transportation department; a representative from Apache Junction’s Parks and Recreation Department; teachers from each level; and some classified employees.

The team has met once and will continue to meet virtually on Mondays. The task force is spearheaded by Heather Wallace, executive director; Susan Doyle, human resources and payroll director; and Dr. Krista Anderson, AJUSD superintendent.

“The health and safety of our students and staff are of the utmost importance and will remain our top priority when making our recommendations,” Dr. Anderson said in the release. “When we reopen school may look a little different than it has in the past, but our commitment to provide the best education possible for our students remains unchanged.”

The team will put together different plans and make a recommendation to the AJUSD School Governing Board on June 23. School is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, July 21.

Registration for all AJUSD schools is being accepted online. Go to ajusd.org for more information.
