Seven 77-passenger buses costing more than $1 million may be purchased by the Apache Junction Unified School District.

The AJUSD Governing Board meets July 13 to discuss and vote on spending $1,021,641.46 in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds on the buses from RWC International. Each is to have air-conditioning, a camera system and an extended warranty, according to a quote from RWC Group.

The district received $5,111,069.81 from the ESSER fund, which is from the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act signed into law on Dec. 27.

The meeting Tuesday begins at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive.

AJUSD Interim Superintendent Heather Wallace is to brief the school board on the bus fleet at a 4 p.m. work session prior to the meeting and at the same location.

The new transportation is to replace buses that are more than 15 years old, need air-conditioning repairs, have high mileage and have hard-to-find replacement parts, according to AJUSD documents.
