Two Apache Junction High School choir students will travel March 4-8 to Salt Lake City, Utah, to be in the American Choral Directors Association’s Western Division Honor Choir.
The Apache Junction Unified School District Governing Board recently approved the trip.
“We have two outstanding choral students, Hannah O’Toole and Brandy Giron, who made it to ACDA Western Division Honor Choir,” Andie Chung, AJHS director of choirs, said in a letter to the Governing Board.
“The western division is from five states --- California, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah and Arizona --- and we are the only public school from the state of Arizona for Junior High School Choir, Grade 7-9 choir,” she said.
The cost of the plane trip is $700, meals and lodging $1,280.56 and the registration fee is $556. The travel is to be financed by the school’s activity fund, according to a request-to-travel form.
“Attending this honor choir and conference will offer these students work with nationally renowned conductors and they will gain ‘mountaintop’” experience with great choral literature,” Ms. Chung said in the letter.
“AJHS students who attended ACDA Division honor choirs in the past are involved in music in colleges and pursuing as career and its impact has been incredibly huge,” she said.
Anabel Giron, Brandy Giron’s mother, will accompany the two students as a chaperon and will pay for her travel, Ms. Chung said.
