Merrell Shutt Grant

Posted

Merrell, a Nebraska native who retired to Sun City in 1987, passed away at age 94 on September 1, 2020.
Prior to retirement Merrell taught high school English in Lincoln, Nebraska for 29 years and raised two sons there. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska. As an undergraduate student she was Editor-in-Chief for the 1947 Cornhusker Yearbook and a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, as well as Mortar Board and Pi Lambda Theta honoraries.
After moving to Sun City, she lived for many years with her long-term partner Harry Braymes until his passing in 1995.
Merrell was active across the years in the Sun City China Painting Club, the Recreation Center Entertainment Committee, and the Handicapable, Bridge and Nebraska clubs.
While in university and afterwards, Merrell stayed active and connected to her sorority Delta Delta Delta.
She is survived by her sons, Roger, Lincoln, NE, and David, Bellingham, WA; grandchildren: Alexander, Daniel, Sean and Courtney; and great-grandchild Harrison.
She was born in Diller, Nebraska, and laid to rest at Sunland Memorial Park, Sun City, AZ.
When Merrell retired from teaching she paraphrased Thoreau, remarking she was “leaving the woods because she had other lives to live and no more time for this one and these lives, and she’d like to see and experience her new ones.” She certainly fulfilled that promise to herself. She had a life well lived.
