Potential Maricopa County property tax increase on table

A public meeting has been set for later this month on a proposed property tax increase for the Maricopa County Community College District announced.
The district released its Truth and Taxation information for the fiscal year 2023-24 budget that shows a slight bump in its overall tax rates. The district is one of the largest in the U.S. with 10 schools and more than 220,000 students.
The district "intends" to raise its primary property taxes over last year's levels — an increase of 2.86%, the announcement said.
The increase amounts to about $16 million. Residents will see about a $3 increase per $100,000 of assessed value on their homes, according to the district.
"For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Maricopa County Community College District's primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to be $107.91 (total proposed taxes including the tax increase)," the announcement said. "Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $104.91."
The proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction, the announcement said. The increase "is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter-approved bonded indebtedness or budget" and tax overrides.
The meeting — at 6:30 p.m. May 23 — will be held at the Conference Center at Rio Salado College, 2323 W. 14th Street, Tempe.
