Sun City ladies compete in Ms. Senior America Pageant

40-plus states represented

Two ladies represented Sun City and their respective home states at the Ms. Senior America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Sharon Word and Barbara Snyder are both members of the Sun City Poms, and both turned 80 this year, born just hours apart on July 3 and 4, respectively.

Ladies representing 41 states competed in Atlantic City, with Ms. Word entering as Ms. Senior Wyoming and Ms. Snyder as Ms. Senior Washington. Contestants compete in four categories: evening gown; philosophy of life statement in less than 35 seconds; talent; and interview with the judges.

Ms. Word was born in Boulder, Colorado, and graduated from Colorado University with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree (piano major) and a minor in Elementary Education in 1961. She then received her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She taught in the Denver Public Schools for 32 years, was awarded the Teacher of the Year Award in 1995, and retired in 1998. Ms. Word and her husband Phill have been married for 36 years and made Arizona their permanent home in 2014.

Ms. Word has volunteered for many organizations and charities, including Sky Kids, Gamma Phi Beta camp board, Victims of Domestic Violence Charities through the Cameo Club of Arizona, and playing and entertaining at assisted living and retirement facilities around the West Valley. She was crowned Ms. Senior Colorado 2001 and placed in the top 10 in the Ms Senior America Pageant.

Her philosophy of life is “Yesterday cannot be relived, tomorrow is uncertain so make the most of today. Believe in yourself and what you can or cannot do. Shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

Ms. Snyder was born in Detroit, Michigan, and she and her husband Jim have four children. Now an Arizona resident, she is a member of several Sun City dance groups, and works with Alzheimer residents.

The Ms. Arizona Pageant is administered by the Ms. Senior Arizona/America organization under directors Herme and Ken Sherry, with the help of assistant director Jean McCurdy and Danny Davis.
