The Scottsdale Unified School District will host three, student-centered, town hall events this school year to hear from its students on issues such as diversity, inclusion, education opportunities and school safety.

The first in the series be at 2 p.m., Nov. 2, at Arcadia High School, 4703 E. Indian School Road in Phoenix. “A Conversation on School Climate” will feature Chandler High School senior Teah Scott, president of the East Valley NAACP Youth Council, as moderator.

SUSD students can ask questions, make statements and relate their perspectives to a panel of community leaders and school district officials, according to a press release.

They will also be able to submit their questions and observations in writing to Miss Scott, who will share them with the audience and panel.

“We have a tendency to get caught up in ‘adult-speak’ when we’re talking about how to help our youth,” SUSD Executive Director of Support Services Dr. Steven Chestnut said in a prepared statement.

“Who better to hear from than our students, who live these diversity, equality and safety issues every day? If we are going to address the issues effectively on their behalf, we need to hear from our students.”

The Arcadia High School Town Hall panel includes:

  • Erica Maxwell, associate superintendent of equity, diversity and inclusion, Arizona Department of Education
  • Aaron Minor, commander, Special Operations Division, Scottsdale Police Department
  • Amy Palatucci, principal, Coronado High School
  • Shannon Paloma, social studies teacher, Arcadia High School
  • Dr. Milissa Sackos, assistant superintendent of secondary education, SUSD
  • Todd Stevens, principal, Arcadia High School
  • Amanda Turner, social worker, Arcadia and Coronado high schools, SUSD

Spanish translation services will be provided.

The event will be preceded at 1 p.m. by a student and parent Resource Fair featuring local human services organizations.

Two more Teen Town Hall events are planned: at Saguaro High School on Feb. 22, 2020, and at Desert Mountain High School on April 25, 2020.
