Kvaran: Christian symbolism in rebel flag

Posted

Thanks to Martin Andrews (“Confederate flag information is misleading,” Sun City Independent, Oct. 9, 2019) for clarifying some issues surrounding the Confederate flag.

I will continue to call it “the Confederate flag” even though it is more technically correct to refer to it as the Tennessee battle flag. We all know which flag we are discussing.

What I found truly fascinating was the amount of Christian symbolism that was crammed into the CSA flags. The CSA Constitution contains the same separation of church and state clause that we find in ours, though the CSA Preamble does include the phrase, “invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God,” which is not found in our Constitution.

So, although (to quote writer Andrews) the flag represents “the blood of Christ, with the protection of God...united in our Christian fight for liberty,” and although claiming to be acting under “the guidance of Almighty God,” it appears that God, with his “infinite wisdom” did not agree.

It seems that to God, black lives do matter.
