Apache Junction students to perform 'The Tale of Snow White'

Show Dec. 5 at Performing Arts Center at Apache Junction High School

Drama students from Cactus Canyon Junior High School will give a new twist on an old tale during a one-night performance of “The Tale of Snow White.”

It is 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Performing Arts Center at Apache Junction High School, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Children 3 and under are free.

The story takes a contemporary spin on the classic story by the Brothers Grimm and includes new and old characters such as a gaggle of forest animals, friendly dwarf villagers, a troupe of ladies-in-waiting, and even a nerdy government representative who is trying to keep the forest dwellers from ruining the environment.

“This fresh and funny adaptation will make even the most jaded folks laugh out loud as it expands the Brothers Grimm tale with new characters who have always lived between the lines of the classic fairy tale,” said Zack Irvine, who teaches drama at the junior high and who will be directing the play. “We invite everyone to come to enjoy the show and support our talented group of thespians.”

In addition to performing, the drama students create many of the plays sets and costumes from recycled materials.

The production --- and drama in general --- helps students enhance their mental acuity and focus by memorizing lines and listening for cues.

Additional benefits include improved communication with others, building confidence, working cooperatively with others and developing tolerance and empathy.

Although the play is a modern adaptation, students learn that the original play was published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and William.

The original story was fairly gruesome and Walt Disney produced a more family-friendly animated musical fantasy film version in 1937.

The CCJH rendition focuses more on farcical comedy.

Tickets can be purchased the night of the performance. The box office opens at 6 p.m.
